Viva Mexico!

Exciting news! We finally went on our honeymoon last week! It's been booked for what, 6 months? And we waited for 4 months after the wedding...but it was worth it! We planned it this way from a scheduling standpoint (around work and Del's school), but also so we could get away in the midst of the winter cold. It was a fabulous trip and it inspired us to dream of all the traveling we hope and wish to do in the future. So here are some details:
We went to Zihuatanejo, Mexico; and since many people don't really know where there is, I provided a map.

Anyway...we spent a week down there and had a blast in the perfect 80-88 degree weather :)

Day 1: We went on a 4hr Sail & Snorkel tour on a big catamaran. It was a relaxing afternoon touring the coast and stopping to snorkel and swim a couple of times.

After we got back to shore we decided to venture downtown Zihua in search of some simple groceries. We ended up asking a random lady who directed us to a tiny, unorganized, STUFFED little store...but it had what we needed! After that, we guessed the best way to walk back to our resort and turns out we guessed right! The trick was to walk along the beach sidewalk for most of it but then hike back up to the road, before the sidewalk ends at a cliff of rocks, and continue on the narrow sidewalk along the road for a bit longer.

Day 2: An uneventful day. It was the "coldest" day while we were there and rained off and on. We still walked downtown and explored a bit but much of the late afternoon was spent back at the resort to stay out of the rain. Zihua started as a fishing village, and even though only 10% of its population still makes a living by fishing, it was fun to see the fishermen bring in their catch and lay it out on the beach.

Day 3: Zip-lining! Our resort offered a variety of excursions they'd set up for you so we decided to try the zip-lining. It wasn't quite what we thought or hoped for but it was still fun! They first made us go through a training course which was HARD! It was hardly any zip-lining at all, it was more of a ropes course! I wasn't a fan of walking across a cables 30 ft up in the air...but I made it! But once we passed the training course we finished up with the fun, longer and higher zip-lines.

After the morning zip-line adventure the sunshine made its debut so we couldn’t resist some time on the beach! We rented a 2 person wave runner for an hour and cruised around the bay. Then after catching a few rays we cleaned up and headed into town for the evening to wander around and enjoy the gorgeous evening. We ended the day with a fabulous dinner at a place called Bandidos and watched a few fireworks from the balcony of our room that were set off from the beach.

Day 4: Another beautiful, sunshine-filled day! We got down to the beach right away and soon found a guy on the beach who rented snorkel gear. We snorkeled out around the rocks right off the beach by our resort and saw some neat tropical fish. Unfortunately, the water was a bit murky but it was still fun to search for a 200lb sea turtle we’d heard was hanging out around that area…we never did see him though.

Day 5: Our last full day in Mexico was similar to day 4. We got up first thing and headed to the beach hoping for some clearer water for snorkeling. However, the waves had picked up overnight and stirred up the water quite a bit. So while Dellas was still determined to hunt down that sea turtle, I decided to lounge on the beach. About a half hour into his search Dellas came back and I asked how it went. He very casually said "good...but I got bit by a fish." After laughing for a minute, he told me it got him on the ear. As he said this I noticed his ear was actually bleeding! Dellas claims that as he dove underwater to examine a shellfish he felt something run into him and nick him on the ear. When we flipped around all he saw were the usual tropical fish...including my favorite: a 4-6in long, fat, dark blue with white polka dots fish. He's assuming he was the culprit due to the size of the bite...everything else was too small. Lol but what a story!
Day 6: Before saying goodbye to the warmth and relaxation, we enjoyed our last few hours where else but the beach! Our flight didn't leave until 5pm so we were able to take our time and soak up the last of the beloved heat until we see it again in Boise in a few months.

We couldn't have asked for a better honeymoon! We can't thank mom and dad Clark enough for allowing us to use their timeshare points for the resort and also my sister and bro-in-law, Jeni & Jake, for the wedding gift of airline miles to get Dellas down there cheaper! ;)
I have an album of ALL our pictures that you can check out here.

(Also, I haven't forgotten about getting pics up of our master bathroom finished product. However, I'm still waiting for a few finishing touches until I want to do that...so keep holding!)

  1. The area is beautiful and the water is gorgeous. Glad you had a wonderful time. Wonder if I could ever convince Mel to go...? Thanks for sharing!! Sorry you missed the turtle - first time I saw one I was so excited I forgot to breathe and let him get away. When I surfaced for air, it suddenly dawned on me "that's what this snorkle gear is for!" duuhhh Still pretty cool to see a gigantic turtle swimming towards you.
